DICKENS “MISSING PAGE” (Eleventh/Twelfth Grade) page 1 of 2

Overview
What stylistic qualities make Dickens’s writing unique? What impact do these stylistic qualities have on the overall meaning and impact of his work? To practice identifying and applying these skills of analysis, you will take part in the “Missing Page” project. This writing assignment is the addition of one page in your chosen Dickens book (either Great Expectations or Bleak House.) It is a creative writing assignment, not an essay. This is due Friday, December 4 th.

The Details
1. Your page will occur in the middle of a chapter.
2. It may begin and/or end in the middle of a sentence, depending on the pages surrounding it.
3. It will be a single-spaced page in 12 pt. font and formatted like the pages in your chosen book:
Great Expectations: 36 lines
Bleak House: 40 lines
4. It should be able to be pasted directly into the novel and make sense when reading from the previous page and onto the next page.
5. It should not contradict the established environment of the novel: it should neither change the personalities of the characters nor contradict the events that happen.
6. The language (diction) will be vivid to capture the reader and replicate Dickens’s style so that the page will seem to “fit” within the rest of the novel.
7. It will be free from mechanical and grammatical errors.
