The 7th grade began the year with an investigation of Brains and learning. They began by taking a learning styles survey and displaying their data in various graphical forms. Then we began to ask how brains learn. To understand that, students got an up-close look at brain anatomy learning all sections of the brain and reading about why scientists are studying teenage brains. They did labs based on lab-rat neuron research and then used that information to design memory tests to test themselves and their classmates. The product of this investigation was a list of "scientifically proven" study techniques that students can use all year long in any of their classes. The more important outcome of the investigation was a classroom atmosphere where we frequently discuss learning styles and ways of making your brain grow new connections. |
