Welcome to the Red Gate site
As part of the school's ongoing efforts to engage students in active
learning and service opportunities, the 9th and 10th grade classes spent
the final day of the first week of school at Red Gate Farm in Buckland.
Red Gate Farm is an educational farm directed by Ben Murray, current
chairman of the Four Rivers Board of Trustees. Ben and the farm manager,
Adrienne Shelton, worked with our students on various projects and also
helped them develop their orienteering skills. Students walked through
the woods at the farm in search of a large, dead tree, using compass
skills and their tenacity to zero in on their target. Students shoveled
compost, trimmed brush, and even herded sheep! At the end of the day,
crews worked together to create temporary art pieces, using natural and
man-made objects to build sculptures of wood, plastic, and steel. At the
end of the day, it was clear that students had done real work; the
animals, the garden, and the farm itself were all better for having had
Four Rivers students there.
