Bird

By: Kai Geffen

A bird is an animal in the class Aves, has wings that allow it to fly in most cases, lays eggs, and is warm-blooded.

The bird has long been an inspiration to man. Its flying has stirred the longing in humans to fly and soar with no shackles holding them down. Even though the bird has stirred such emotions in humans, we have caused over 100 species of it to go extinct by pollution, destruction of habitat, and windows which confuse and kill it. Birds also die out when such things as parasites transfer from insects and fish the bird eats to the bird, making the bird week and sometimes die. Almost all birds are monogamy (Around 91%) which means that one male bird mates with one female bird, a few are polygenic (Almost 2%) which means one female mates with multiple males, and barely any are polyandry (Less than 1%) which means one male bird will mate with two female birds.

Most birds can fly to catch pray, migrate, and stay safe from grounded predators. One group of birds that cannot fly is the penguins, who have evolved to be excellent swimmers and catch fish for food. They have also developed a thick layer of down to keep warm in the freezing arctic. Ostriches also cannot fly, instead, they run like heck and lay very big eggs, emus, though similar, cannot run as fast as them.

Long ago, birds as we know them didn't even exist. They evolved from reptiles whose scales gradually became wings and their bones hollowed, enabling them to fly easier by decreasing their weight. The bird still has scales on its feet, still lays eggs, still are bipedal (moves via two feet), and still is a vertebrate, showing that it did evolve from reptiles. The bird has changed from being cold-blooded to being warm-blooded because they often hide in the shade and sometimes need to fly overnight when the sun goes down.

Birds that sing and frolic about in the daytime are shown in society as happy child entertainment, like Big Bird and Woody the woodpecker. Birds of the night are shown in a more dreary air, representing despair and depression like The Raven, Edger Allen Poe. Some birds are even shown as being an entity of death, like The Crow, a comic in which a person brings people back with a hatred for their former friends.

BIRDS IN THE CONNETICUT RIVER VALLEY AREA: Bald Eagle, Black Duck, Northern Goshawk, Least Bittern, Piping Plover, Spruce Grouse, Turkey, Whippoorwill.
