A Day at Four Rivers

Every grade is different, and each day varies, but here’s a sample for 7th and 8th:

8:00Morning Meeting - The students meet in advisory crews of 10-12 to greet one another, hear announcements, plan activities, and get ready for the day. Once a week we have a longer community meeting.

8:15 English/SocialStudies - In this first core period, students work in classes of 16 to 18 with one teacher with frequent integration of English and Social Studies. They may be writing and revising stories and essays related to their study of history or current events, discussing challenging readings, or preparing projects for presentation. Grouping is flexible and activities respect learning differences.

10:15Break

10:30Math/Science - During this second core period, Math is based on the exemplary Connected Mathematics Project in 7 th and 8 th. In high school we use the Interactive Mathematics Program, with options for advanced work. Scientific investigation is lively and rigorous: fieldwork may involve exploring local geology, designing and flying tetrahedral kites, or investigating the quality and origin of foods from near and far.

12:25Lunch - Bring a lunch or buy a lunch. Hang out with friends, enjoy brief recess.

1:00Special subjects - Twice a week, one group may go outside for nature studies, another builds skills with computers and new media, still others participate in art and music activities. High school students elect to specialize in one or two. Most students begin Spanish in 8 th grade.

2:00Physical education - Two or three periods a week students participate in our physical education and wellness program, using the school’s fields and indoor spaces.

3:00 Dismissal or Afterschool Activities - An elective sports program runs on most afternoons, with high participation in fall Soccer and spring Ultimate, and the school fields competitive teams at all levels. Homework Club is available three days for those who need it, and appointments for extra help may be made with teachers. Extra music, arts, and other activities are offered as interest and staffing allow.
