SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR

SEVEN TIPS FOR SURVIVING THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS

ACADEMIC PLANNING BY GRADE LEVEL

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

MAY

CONNECTEDU
All seniors have an account at www.connectedu.net. Parents were sent information in mail during the spring about registering for their account. It is vitally important that students use this resource to explore colleges, but most importantly this tool will be used to track application materials from both the college counseling and student perspectives.

THE ONE-STOP WEBSITE www.mefacounselor.org
Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority provides trusted content information and external websites for college planning and financing college. Links for college searching, test registration, etc.

STANDARDIZED TESTING
Remember to practice ahead of time for standardized tests. Getting accustomed to a concise writing, using your calculator wisely, and reading a variety of passage in a timed situation is an uncommon academic experience.

ACT
Seniors: Seniors need to finish their ACT with Writing by the December test date for eligibility in college admissions.

Juniors: Should wait until the spring to take the ACT with Writing in order to concentrate on academic schoolwork and to plan sufficient time for actively preparing for the ACT. I strongly urge seniors to take both the SAT and ACT because of the differences in the style of the exams. You may perform better on one test more than another. Plus, be aware of any conflicts, such as soccer tournaments, when planning you testing date.

Visit act.org for registration or pick up a registration packet in the college counseling area of the library. In addition, there will be information about preparing for the ACT also available.

SAT
Seniors: Seniors need to finish their SAT Reasoning and SAT Subject Tests by the December test date for eligibility in college admissions. The Reasoning Test and Subject Tests cannot be taken on the same test date.

Juniors: Should wait until the spring to take the SAT in order to concentrate on academic schoolwork and to plan sufficient time for actively preparing for the SAT. Subject test should be taken at the conclusion of coursework, for instance U.S. History. Check with the colleges where you are considering for their SAT subject test requirements. Plus, be aware of any conflicts, such as soccer tournaments, when planning you testing date.

STUDENTS WITH ACCOMODATIONS
Students who received accommodations at Four Rivers need to fill out accommodation requests for the SAT through CollegeBoard and the ACT through ACT.org. These organizations have different criteria for granting accommodations for college admissions standardized testing than a public school does. Paperwork needs to be filed within a strict timeframe to be fully processed. Please contact Ms. Childress or Mr. Stenson, if you have any questions.

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH STATUS
Students who are on the free and reduced lunch list for the current school year are eligible for standardized testing fee waivers. Please come to see Ms. Childress in a timely fashion (not a day or so before the registration deadline) for the appropriate paperwork and codes. Additionally, students on the free and reduced lunch list will be provided waivers for college application fees.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Seniors continue to check the black bin in the College Counseling Resource Center in the Farmhouse library. New scholarships are arriving all the time. Plus, make sure to read your emails from Ms. Childress
